I used to really dislike doing family sessions! I think I was missing the point of what they are meant to be. I am not going to lie and say what you wear doesn’t matter, but it’s far from the most important thing. What really helps to prepare before any session is choosing to relax and have fun. I have three kids! I know very well how things can go from perfect to a complete meltdown in 30 seconds and it’s ok! We can work on capturing smiles, snuggles and even tears. There’s always room to recover from a meltdown (sometimes snacks and a treat do come in handy so always feel free to bring those) You know, the photos of myself I love the most, are the ones where I am holding my children (even if they are being comforted or are having a snack).

I always encourage lots of playing during the session. We definitely get some shots where everyone is looking at the camera here and there, but generally I prefer if my families just forget I am even there (I will always help guide the session as necessary in the background or get more involved if needed). Think of what your children would normally love to do! Do they like to have picnics? or do they love to balance on things and throw rocks in the water? Is there a simple tickle game or a song that always gets them happy and engaged? Do the love to play peek-a-boo or have a ride on a blanket? These are the things that will help everyone relax and have a good time.

Lastly, most importantly, Mom and Dad really have to set the example and relax and have fun! Stressed parents make for stressed children! I say that in my newborn sessions, baby sessions and family session alike. I can’t wait to meet all of you and here are some of my recent family sessions <3
